Voco hotel The Hague delivered 100% Plug & Play

The first Voco hotel in the Netherlands was opened in The Hague on 17 June. This hotel was delivered with 100% pluggable electrical installation thanks to the Wieland materials supplied by Isolectra. Steegman Elektrotechniek took care of the entire e-installation and was able to save a lot of time due to the new working method.

The new Voco hotel is located in the former office of the Rotterdam Bank Society; a building from 1923 that combines period architecture and modern spaces. Despite all the challenges involved in such a renovation, Steegman managed to fully install two hotel rooms every day. In total, all 204 hotel rooms, a restaurant and the corridor areas were installed fully pluggable, which means that no loose cables, tubes and junction boxes were used. Isolectra delivered everything prefabricated in ready-made kits. This allows Steegman to do what they do best – installation.

Broadly applicable

“We completely engineered the project together with Isolectra”, says Joey Post, Contractor at Steegman Elektrotechniek. “We were able to work about 60% faster than traditional installation, despite some unforeseen circumstances such as corona and construction delays.”

“With pluggable installation, you really do save 60–90% in labour time”, agrees Claudio Barros, Account Manager at Isolectra. “It saves on labour intensity, because if you have to strip everything down and cut it to size, you have a completely different working process. Also, by installing a pluggable electrical system, you reduce failure costs to a minimum. Isolectra makes the products so customised and colour-coordinated that there is only one way to assemble them. If a company wants to expand in the future, this can be done in a flexible way.”

The system was developed by Isolectra together with Wieland Electric. The Wieland materials are manufactured in Germany and fully comply with the NEN standards. It has a wide range of applications, for example in housing, retail, hotels, horticulture and car parks, explains Barros. “We supply complete installations for 230 Volt systems. These are of high quality and maintenance-free.

Bespoke assembly

For the Voco hotel, the customised and pre-assembled materials were packed in kits for each room and coded by Isolectra and Technische Unie. If Steegman had any questions, they were answered immediately. Isolectra not only supplies products. It also offers training and supports electrical contracters, which made the project a lot easier, according to Post. “There was a committed partnership between Isolectra, the Technische Unie, Hateha (supplier of Jung switch gear) and Steegman. Beforehand, we sat down together to see exactly how we wanted everything. The Voco Hotel has fifteen room types. All products were numbered by floor, room number and room type. The electrical contracters knew exactly which kit they needed for which room. When the kit was empty, the room was ready. This is really super-efficient work.”

Saving even more time

After everything was installed, Steegman checked the hotel for unresolved issues. This is where pluggable electrical installation comes into its own, says Post. “If there is a malfunction, we know that it is only a plug that is wrong. No more searching and measuring or taking things apart in the traditional way. This system is so straight-forward that we didn’t have to spend much time sorting out unresolved issues."
