On 24 February, the construction of a new pharmaceutical centre was handed over to the Antoni van Leeuwenhoek Hospital (AVL) and the Netherlands Cancer Institute (NKI) in Amsterdam. The new building has a spacious floor area and is divided into various functions. The ground floor houses the goods acceptance centre and general areas. The 1st floor houses a new Main Equipment Room (MER) and the 2nd–4th floors house the production pharmacy. Floor 5 is a technology floor and the top floor will have offices. Fitter Breman Utiliteit Zwolle supplied and installed all medical gases for the new building, as well as the mechanical, electrical, control, clean-room and VHP systems. Wherever possible, pluggable electrical installation concepts were selected.

“The number of professional construction workers is becoming increasingly scarce, so a lot of work has to be done with fewer people”, says Yannick Boertje, Account Manager at Isolectra. “Pluggable electrical installation provides a solution for this problem, with high installation quality, simple installation, short fitting times and minimal failure costs going hand in hand perfectly.” The pharmaceutical centre was also looking for a fast, efficient and effective installation solution, confirms Michael Verkerk, Cost Accountant/Engineer at Breman Utiliteit Zwolle. “Since we’ve had a very pleasant working relationship with Isolectra for many years, we naturally chose the pluggable electrical installation products from this supplier. Isolectra’s pluggable products have even become our standard now. We are very familiar with the installation methods and possibilities. Additionally, we have various products in stock, which enables us to work even faster and more efficiently.”

Pluggable electrical lighting systems

In the pharmaceutical centre, the lighting installations and the like were designed to be pluggable. “Based on the available installation drawings and in close partnership, the Breman Utiliteit Zwolle planners and the Isolectra consultants selected the most suitable products for this project”, says Boertje. “We then created and discussed the pluggable electrical installation designs. Wieland GST18-i5® cables and connectors were procured, which interconnect the power points and Maas & Hagoort lighting fixtures on a plug & play basis.” Verkerk: “Because the lighting fixtures could be easily interconnected, fewer sockets were needed above the ceilings. Additionally, there was no need for laying sleeve tubes, drawing wires or fitting and welding junction boxes, resulting in a higher installation pace. At Isolectra’s advice, clearly coded cables were used rather than coloured cables to improve logistical performance. In addition, the connecting cables and connectors for the motion sensors have been adapted for plug-and-play.”

All Wieland GST18-i5® cables contain five cores, explains Boertje: three for the power supply and two for the DALI lighting control. In total, more than 1,000 GST18-i5® installations were fitted above the ceilings. In addition, Isolectra supplied Wieland GST13-i3® cables and connectors for the socket outlets in the wall ducts. All pluggable electrical installations were supplied by wholesaler Technische Unie.
